Carrie Weems, Thomas Struth and other research

Carrie Mae Weems
Her kitchen table series is really beautiful. I decided to look a lit more into as I thought it would be relevant to me. I want to capture a similair domestic feel in my images. I´m also considering black and white as an option for my photos. I do know that my pictures are all going to be in different rooms (if I go for my first option which I am leaning towards (the childhood memory idea)).

Thomas Struth

Thomas Struth was also somebody Anne mentioned during class. I found these pictures really interesting, the way the families would arrange themselves. This got me thinking how would my family arrange themselves for a family photo, if I didn´t give them any directions. I think it would be interesting to explore futher, but I also don´t want to just completely copy Struth´s idea. This does also link with my idea of spaces. Maybe I could somehow show the physical distance that i between me and my family, them living in Brussels and me being here in Farnham.

Jonathan Diaz

I found the Anything Can Be project by Jonathan Diaz and fell in love. He makes the wishes of severly ill children come true through his photography. I think the whole idea is so sweet. I also thought this could relate to my childhood Project, especially if I do end up using photoshop. I think my photographs could end up looking similair, though of course we are not children. Instead we´d be teens who are reliving those childhood memories and dreams. One thing that I loved was Harry Potter and my brothers and I came up with a way to play quidditch in their big room. We also used to play it with groups of friends. If I do go with the more photoshop heavy way for my childhood idea, I think our quidditch game could be something I could recreate.

Other things I looked for inspiration

I read Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes, to get more research on photography theory. Now I also know what lecturers talk about when they talk about Barthes.

My favourite photographers from that book:
Trent Parke
Motoyuki Daifu
Robin Cracknell
Alain Laboile
Dita Pepe

I borrowed out a Lens culture book at the very benning of the project to find inspiration

I also borrowed the book below at the very beginning, because I was thinking of doing black and white surreal photography. I found a lot of the pictures by Angus McBean really inspirational and beautiful.
