| Mary Costa with storyboards for Disney´s Sleeping Beauty". This image and caption were in the book shown below. I have previously researched Sleeping Beauty for its beautiful concept art, so I found it very interesting to see the storyboards. Many of the original disney storybaords were thrown away, which may be why I can´t find much on the sleeping beauty´s one. |

I bought a this book "The art of Movie Storyboards" on Amazon kindle, to research professional storyboarding. It has over 2200 pages and examples throughout the years of cinema. I added lots of screenshots below, so you can get an idea of what it is about.
Already the introduction helped me get a better idea of what storyboarding really is about:

I think this is really what I was missing. I didn´t have a clear idea of what I was meant to be doing, but now I do. I honestly have come to really love storyboarding.
I scrolled through the photos and was amazed by how different they all were. I thought I´d find rules and tips, but instead I realised it really just depends on your style. There doesn´t seem to be a right and a wrong. Lots of different tools have been used, some drawings go over the board of the frame, some look like ready works of art, some are almost stick figures, some show a lot of movement, some it is only written. The writing too is different in all of them, some being just quick words written by hand, some longer typed paragraphs. I find this really inspiring, and I might experiment to find what best suits me.
I added a load of screenshots to show what I mean:
With what I had learned from the book I started out the final storyboard. I knew I had to be quick, and as drawing on my iPad always turns me into a perfectionist, I decided I would just use pen and paper. This way I can´t zoom in and torture myself over every detail :). The book also inspired me to dare to be more rough. Again, if I want to finish this in time, I have to be very quick, so rough it will be. Also the fact that it´s black and white speeds me up, although maybe in the end I will add some colour, to show light. This is what I have up to now:
I also bought two books on cinema! One was an analysis and behind the scenes of La la land (one of my favourites) and the other was about translating a book into a film, which is also very interesting to me. I´ll be reading them in my own time and see if anything inspires me!
This actually reminds me of the beautiful shadows in La la land. I talked about shadows in my lighting post and thought this would be quite relevant to add:

The blueish light also reminds me of the "void" we wanted to have outside
I´ll add the finished storyboard to another blog post along with the final shot list. |
Lili you have conducted thorough and in-depth research into storyboarding which has added so much to your understanding of the power of cinematic language. This is truly impressive work. Well done!
