Curating maps and networks

Website, Instagram and publication

We decided on how and where to present our final work. We will build an online exhibition on a website, using Sqaurespace. We will have the five themes separately, and clicking into one will show all the work and artist introductions from that theme. I think this is a nice and simple to exhibit our work. We will have an instagram for publicity, where we will be showing our works in progress. We will be posting three posts every work day, per theme. My theme, Boundary, will be posting on Mondays. On top of this we will also have a publication, made with InDesign. I said I could be the lead in InDesign for my group as I really love using it and have experience in it.

The Logo

Alya designed a logo and also did a lot of work imagining the instagram and website. We were all so impressed with her work (and also speed).

I thought we were all designing a logo though, so I made one too. My idea was to have the torn written apart and the together together. I wanted it to be simple and easily readable, with the together being the main focus. I did them quickly on my Ipad´s adobe illustrator.

I was talking to Andreea and Laura whilst doing these. Laura suggested I try one with hand writing, and she said she really liked this one. I presented it as the possible final, although we did show all my other sketches, which some people liked more. That is kind of why I did so many variations, so that we could then choose the favourite.

I sent the drawings to Jeremiah via email and he seemed to like them. He ended up showed them to the whole class. We had a long discussion about what the logo should look like, and what was for the best. We ended up wanting a mix between the two, and all the while Alya was editing them in real time. (Thank you Alya!) After several different versions we voted between two end the winner was this one:
She very quickly created these frames for us, to put around our work on instagram. This way we would all have a common thread in our works, so it wouldnt be completely random. I think our instagram is a nice way to show our work in progress.

I am very happy with the final logo. I love how we were able to combine both designs. It´s clear to read but also has a ziney feel to it.

The ePublication

I signed up to be the InDesign lead for our group. I´m excited to get designing.

We had to send a manifesto for Emannuelle before our meeting with her. Here is mine:

Exploring the eeriness of an empty land, commenting on the loss of natural spaces and the biodiversity that lives within it. The boundary between humans and nature, life and death. Where is the line, where does it become too much?

References: The weird and the eerie by Mark Fisher, Richard Long

Keywords: biodiversity, ghosts, animation layered on photographs

We know now that the ePublication will be published on our uni´s bookRoom | (thebookroom.net). I´m still not sure if we are making a brochure, zine, or if we are going to try and create a sort of map. We had a meeting with bookrooms Danielle Waeckerle. She showed us what art books are and I thought it was really inspiring. She also read parts of our manifeso. The main thing she suggested was that we make a kind of map- our work on one side and a "map" on the other. I actually quite liked that idea. She suggested A2 which seems very big to me, not like the little brochure I imagined. It does make sense though as there is so many of us we are going to need a lot of place to fit it all in one.

I did some thinking afterwards. I´m still really unclear what the format is going to be so here I was just trying stuff out.

This was the kind of thing I imagined. I looked into loads of photos of maps to try and see how they are folded. It turns out a map can be folded in lots of different ways and vary in size and format :)

I was trying to figure out how many folds we could have

I downloaded a brochure template on InDesing, to get an idea how they are made. This is the sort of thing I was originally imagining, but Emmanuelle´s idea would be much larger

I tried to take the brochure format and imagine it to be much bigger. Here it is four times the sizes, the different colours to show all the different folds. I feel like this is way too much however.

Here I tried yet another version. If we had six folds it would mean one for the title and information and one each for every theme. I think the panels would have to be quite large to fit bits of everybody´s works. I also tried out if the other side was a map. I just took a google maps screen shot of the uni. I left it a bit transparent so you can tell it is the other side of the first image.

The blue on the right is the blue Alya has used on the website. It would makes sense if the two of them had a common colour scheme.

I love using InDesing but I hadn´t used it for awhile. I had forgotten some things, so this was a good recap for me. I feel more ready to do whatever needs to be done for the publication.

Emanuelle sent us a link to a wesbite that is built like a zine. I find it very interesting and might take inspiration from it:

Xenofeminism: A Politics for Alienation | Laboria Cuboniks

https://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88v/burroughs-cutup.html

During Thursday´s group meeting we decided not to do the map. We thought it would be much faster and easier to do a zine. I´m a bit unclear as to what each theme is doing separately, but I think we start by essentially each theme doing their own zine and then we will put them all together. We talked about having to have something in common, so that they are not completely random. We dont know what this is yet. We also liked the idea of taking pieces of our manifesto and putting them together, like a collage of text.
