Maps and Networks: Initial thoughts

Maps & Networks: This project enables you to explore the metaphor of ‘maps’ and/or ‘networks’ to investigate narrative and non-linear ideas, enabling experimental approaches to the static or moving image.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

LO1 Demonstrate independent research and insightful reflection that informs project planning on your blog

LO2 Document and rationalise your choice of production methods (in relation to your Learning Agreement)

LO3 Create imaginative outcomes in your chosen media that demonstrate effective use of technical, creative and aesthetic possibilities

LO4 Demonstrate knowledge of professional networks and context for disseminationby identifying targetaudiences

LO5 Developideasindependentlyandwithconfidence, reflectingonandidentifyingstrategiesto achieve creativeprojects

(Deadline keeps moving)

16/11 talked with Andreea and the little idea at the back of my mind became more clear. I thought about what I would like to exhibit and I thought it should be something that I really care about: the environment. I began to think about how I could link this to maps and networks. I quickly thought of biological networks which is defined on wikipedia as:" biological network is any network that applies to biological systems. A network is any system with sub-units that are linked into a whole, such as species units linked into a whole food web. Biological networks provide a mathematical representation of connections found in ecological, evolutionary, and physiological studies, such as neural networks." I also thought about traces left behind my animals and insects, like footprints, paths, and networks of tunnels made by rabbits, voles, ants etc.

To link this with maps I thought about google maps, or maps of large forest areas. This inevitably led me into thinking about how these areas have grown smaller and smaller over the years. I thought it could be interesting to look into the decline of forest areas and their networks, through the use of maps.

After our talk my idea being clearer. Here are some notes I made:

Environment, loss of wild land, biodiversity, climate change

Before and after photos of forests etc, projected onto each other.

Networks; roots, ants, rabbits and voles, holes and tunnels, paths and roads

could play with sound

Decaying forest sounds, animal and bird sounds, growing and dying

Should I add drawings?

Should it be a moving image? Moving life etc?

Here are some photos I looked at as inspiration/research:

deforestation, loss of biodiversity,
I have been watching lots of Netflix documentaries about animals and nature and their decline. Many of them show satellite videos of forests disappearing.

I thought of before and after photos taken by google maps. What does this entail? Dramatic, powerful, such a big scale

Most before and after photos I found were from floods and other natural disasters.

Biological networks, network of deseases

Traces left my animals:

LEARNING AGREEMENT

Draft one, not at all finished

I did this learning agreement to develop my idea further and to have something to show during our peer to peer tutorial on the 8th. Since then we were told that our deadline has been moved forward to January and our studio shoot pushed back to february (most likely). After our tutorial I thought I should focus more on the visuals, whether I should make collages, videos, drawings or photographs. I´ve been focusing a little too much on the idea and the research, than what it will actually look like. I will look into this over the Christmas holidays.
